Make An Eagle With Color Flow Icing

Make a cake featuring an eagle.

If you want to add pizzazz to your next Fourth of July celebration, follow these simple steps to make a cake featuring a patriotic eagle. You don't have to be a professional cake decorator to pull it off. Anybody can do it. Color flow icing lets you turn a run-of-the-mill dessert into a fantastic work of culinary art.

Instructions

Preparation

1. Print out your favorite eagle picture and cut and tape it to a piece of cardboard. Next, tape wax paper onto it so that it covers the whole picture.

2. Make the color flow icing using the Wilton's mix. Follow the instructions on the package by adding water, powdered sugar, and food coloring paste. Then beat it with a mixer until you reach the appropriate consistency.

3. Repeat step 2 in different bowls for as many colors that you need. Colors you use to outline the design should have a thicker consistency. Colors you use to fill in parts of the design should have a thinner consistency so that they can flow to fill the appropriate space evenly.

4. Put the various color flow mixes into disposable decorator bags with round metal tips.

Trace and fill the design

5. Trace the outlines of your design with your thicker consistency flow mix color directly on top of the wax paper picture. Be sure to close up all the cracks so that the fill colors don't bleed through. Let it dry for one to two hours.

6. Fill in the design with the thinner consistency flow mix colors of choice.

7. Let the whole thing dry completely for about 2 to 4 days at room temperature. After a few days, lightly cover the design with a paper towel to prevent dust from collecting on top of it.

8. When you are ready to put your design onto a cake, carefully peel it off the wax paper, and then prop it up on a few sugar cubes partially embedded in the cake. This not only gives the piece a three-dimensional finish, it also keeps the egg-based design from deteriorating when in direct contact with the greasy cake.
