Vintage newspapers make unique and interesting collages.
Collages are created by artists of all ages and skill types, from toddlers to famous painters like Kurt Schwitters, Pablo Picasso and Max Ernst. Introducing young artists to collage creation is done with inexpensive materials that are located around the home or sold at crafts shops. The use of newspaper and paint on canvas will allow children and adults of all ages to create fun works of arts on a budget with minimal prep time and cleanup.
Instructions
1. Gather all of the materials required for your collage. These include a blank canvas, three to five newspapers, paint, paintbrushes and acrylic glue, which is available at hardware and home improvement stores.
2. Flip through the newspapers and cut or rip out any pictures, ads, words or headlines that catch your eye. Use scissors for a cleaner cut or rip out the desired pieces with your hands for a different look.
3. Arrange the newspaper cut-outs on the canvas. Create a shape with the pieces or scatter them as you choose.
4. Cover the clippings with a layer of acrylic glue. Use the glue to stick the clippings to the canvas. Use a paintbrush to apply a thin layer of glue on top of the clippings and around them.
5. Allow the glue to set for at least two hours before adding paint to the canvas. Use brushes, your hands or a tool of your choice to paint between and over the newspaper clippings.
6. Allow the paint to dry completely (at least eight hours) before moving and displaying your collage.
