Make Your Own Digital Silhouettes

A full-body silhouette using white instead of the traditional black.

The human form has long served as an inspiration for art. From sculpture to painting, artists have depicted the human form with a variety of techniques. Depicting the outline or "silhouette" of a person has remained a popular form of portraiture even in the age of digital imagery. You can use virtually the same traditional techniques to make a silhouette but with photo editing software to create your own digital silhouettes.

Instructions

1. Open the photo editing software of your choice.

2. Click on the "File" menu and select "Open".

3. Click on the image file you wish to make into a digital silhouette and click "Open" to open the file.

4. Click on the "Selection" tool. Some software programs refer to this as the "Lasso" tool.

5. Click and drag the "Selection" tool around the outside of the figure.

6. Right-click the selection and select "Layer via Copy" to copy the selected area to a new layer.

7. Click and drag the "Background" layer to the trash icon at the lower-right of the window.

8. Click on the "Eraser" tool. Erase any rough edges or portions of the figure you did not erase with the initial crop.

9. Click on the "Magic Wand" tool and click the blank background of the image.

10. Click the "Select" menu and click on "Inverse" to select the figure.

11. Click the "Edit" menu, select "Fill". Select black as your fill color and click "Fill" to fill in the figure with black.

12. Click the "File" menu, select "Save As", enter the file type, name and destination and click "Save" to save the digital silhouette.
