Learn Hand Engraving

Learn Hand Engraving

Hand engraving is the art of using chisels, gravers and other power tools to carve intricate designs in hard substances, like marble or wood. Learning hand engrave requires taking some lessons, buying engraving tools, engraving materials and practicing. Lessons range from taking classes, learning online or even being an apprentice. Apply your engraving lessons to each new engraving you make in order to practice new techniques.

Instructions

1. Buy hand-engraving tools and materials to practice your craft. Tools include chisels, drills and even lathes. Your material should be hard but capable of being carved, like wood or marble. If you want extra help, attend local engraving classes from a community college or get lessons from a local engraver.

2. Continually attend any classes you may take and read all reading materials. These books can prepare you for the more complex methods you will utilize as you advance. You can also obtain help from your teacher by attending lessons regularly.

3. Practice your lessons regularly as you learn. Buy new materials or tools as necessary and continually practice all your techniques. Simple techniques will be learned first, such as basic engraving and specific engraving patterns.

4. Apply your simple techniques to learn more complex engraving methods, such as engraving names or specific shapes. Practice these techniques regularly on your materials until you have them mastered.

5. Periodically test your abilities by engraving something specific. Start with a simple engraving like a square or a series of parallel lines. Move on to more complex engravings such as words or even shapes. Once you have mastered those abilities, move on to more complex methods.

6. Engrave complex pictures that utilize as many techniques as possible, such as shapes, parallel lines, words and detailed pictures. If you have a teacher, show these to her to get her critique. Keep practicing regularly to improve your skills.
