Scratch-off lottery tickets are popular for their instant payoff, as well as ease of use. Some people may scoff at scratch-offs as piddly amounts of money to win, but other people are aware that scratch-offs provide the best odds to win of all the lottery games. 1. Log on to the Internet. Go to your state's lottery website homepage. Click on "instant win" or "scratch off" lottery games. Check the current games for the best odds, as well as which games have the most available prizes left to be won. (This is updated weekly in most states.) Choose games to play that still have thousands of prizes left. Avoid any games that have less than 1,000 prizes in any category, as many of these prizes will already have been won by the time you see the prize tally.
2. Refrain from playing any games that are seasonal and are past their peak month. For example, do not play a Christmas-themed scratch-off game in March or April, even if it is still available. These games will not have many, if any, prizes left.
3. Go to your local gas station or store that participates in the state lottery. Look at the scratch-off games offered at that store. Compare the games at that store with the best games you saw on the lottery website.
4. Buy scratch-offs that cost more to further increase your odds of winning. A $20 scratch-off typically has a 1 in 3 chance of winning, while $1 games have a 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 chance of winning.
